Background and Context: Integrating Customer Databases Following the Merger of Seven Group Companies
In 2021, Recruit integrated seven of its core business and functional companies within the group.
To maximize the benefits of this integration, consolidating customer data previously managed separately across multiple business units became a key priority. This consolidation enables a comprehensive view of transactions across business domains, facilitating high-level analysis and accurate management decision-making.
This initiative was led by the Customer Infrastructure Design Group, Planning Department, Client Success Promotion Office, Division Headquarters.
Addressing the Challenge of Customer Database Integration
The mission and vision of the Customer Base Design Group is to integrate and plan the utilization of customer data across the multiple service domains managed by Recruit. By doing so, we aim to build a mechanism that allows Recruit to grasp and understand the 360-degree status of our customers, enabling us to provide services and value at the optimal time.
Recruit operates primarily in two business domains: promotional services and human resources. We previously held a vast amount of customer data across multiple customer management systems, including significant duplication. Because these systems used different management IDs, it was difficult to match records, making it impossible to integrate information for a single unique company across different domains.
Initially, we attempted in-house data cleansing. However, without a reliable, authoritative source of corporate information, this process was not only burdensome but also faced challenges regarding the comprehensiveness and accuracy of the data matching.
Therefore, we adopted a policy to integrate customer data by introducing an external corporate database that provides a common key code system (customer master) as the foundation for data matching, while offering broad coverage. As a result, uSonar's corporate database, LBC, was selected and implemented based on three key criteria:
1. The volume of data held, including coverage of headquarters, branches, and individual business locations (including source diversity).
2. Data freshness and accuracy (frequency of information acquisition and updates using both scraping and manual verification).
3. The inclusion of corporate affiliation and hierarchical structures.
Implementation Results and Future Utilization
We have integrated the full LBC corporate database master from uSonar with Recruit's unified customer base (Connext) via API. uSonar provides real-time information on corporate mergers, relocations, and branch office changes captured within their system.
* LBC, provided by uSonar, is one of Japan's largest corporate databases, covering over 12.5 million business locations ranging from large enterprises to small and medium-sized businesses, with structured corporate affiliation data.
