How Product Design Influences User Satisfaction

Updated: September 3, 2024

At our company, we define "Product Design" as the comprehensive design of a product's appearance, functionality, usability, and development process. Product design is an initiative aimed at optimizing the user experience by balancing aesthetic and functional elements.
We believe that high-quality product design enhances trust in the product, increases user engagement, fosters emotional connections, and ultimately leads to higher user satisfaction.

In this article, we explain the overview and processes of the "Product Design" we advocate, while providing key perspectives and metrics that are important for those responsible for selecting IT services.

Overview of Product Design

At our company, we define product design as an initiative aimed at improving the User Experience (UX) through three core elements: User Centric Design, Consistency, and Accessibility.
Each element is explained below.

User Centric Design (UCD)

We position understanding user needs and behaviors as a critical element of product design, which we refer to as User Centric Design (hereinafter referred to as UCD).
To establish UCD, we conduct preliminary research, usability testing, and user interviews to concretize ease of use from the user's perspective.

Consistency

Consistency in the user interface is a critical factor in ensuring that users can operate the product intuitively.
We prioritize the theme of "Design That Requires No Manual," with the fundamental principle that users should be able to understand the product's capabilities at a glance. Furthermore, we strive for a design that allows for seamless operation by ensuring that identical actions and similar types of information are presented consistently.

Accessibility

We pursue design that incorporates accessibility to ensure that users across all departments can utilize our products effectively.
This enables the formation of a shared understanding based on data displayed on the same screen, even for initiatives that span multiple departments. By advancing various business processes with this shared understanding, we believe our client companies can enhance their productivity.

The Importance of Information Architecture (IA)

The organization and structuring of information are also vital in product design.
When information is appropriately organized, users can access necessary data quickly, which reduces their psychological burden. Additionally, when information is systematically arranged, users can easily locate it using on-screen buttons or search functions. This allows users to access their desired information without stress, thereby improving the User Experience (UX).
Since our products are tools for searching and visualizing target information, we consider the appropriate and systematic organization of information to be our highest priority. To this end, we have established the role of Information Architect (IA)—with the support of external professionals—to organize and structure information, making it easier for users to find and understand. Specific outputs of our IA include the creation of navigation menus and the categorization of functions.

Product Design Process to Enhance Customer Experience (CX)

We believe that an intuitive interface and a clean, aesthetic design enhance the credibility of the product itself and convey a sense of high quality. We consider prioritizing product design to be effective in increasing engagement between our client companies and our products.
The product design process includes steps such as research, concept development, prototyping, testing, and feedback collection.

Various Types of Research

We conduct interviews, surveys, research, and observations to understand user needs, behavioral principles, and pain points. Persona creation is also performed during this stage.
Additionally, we investigate competitor products and market trends to identify our product's points of differentiation, utilizing SWOT analysis and benchmarking.

Concept Development

We generate ideas from various perspectives using brainstorming and mind mapping. We facilitate the exchange of opinions within the team to foster innovative thinking.
We evaluate the generated ideas and select promising concepts by considering feasibility and marketability. Evaluation criteria include technical feasibility, costs, and impact on users.

Prototyping

We create simple diagrams to illustrate the basic structure of the product, which helps visualize information layout and core navigation.
Based on the wireframes, we proceed to detailed design. We develop the specific form of the user interface (UI) by incorporating colors, fonts, and imagery.
We create prototypes that users can operate at an early stage to verify the actual user experience. We consider prototypes to be essential tools for confirming interaction design and user flows, as well as for obtaining rapid feedback.

Usability Testing

In parallel with task-based testing and A/B testing, we conduct tests where actual users interact with the prototype to evaluate design usability and identify potential issues. We collect and analyze both qualitative feedback and quantitative data obtained from usability testing and other evaluation methods, and use these insights to improve the product design. Specific improvements to design and functionality include UI adjustments, the addition of new features, and the enhancement of existing functions.

Iterative Process

As necessary, we repeat the prototyping and testing phases, continuing refinements until the product perfectly aligns with user needs. Once all feedback and improvements have been incorporated, we finalize the design. At this stage, the product design is optimized and prepared for the transition to development.

Product Design Implementation

The engineering team develops the product based on the finalized product design.
Following implementation, we conduct further testing and perform final adjustments. We collect user feedback and make improvements as required.

Launch and Continuous Improvement

We launch the final product to the market.
We believe it is essential to update product designs appropriately in response to market changes and user needs. Even after launch, we regularly collect feedback and requests from users to ensure continuous improvement. We also collect and utilize quantitative metrics such as usability scores, engagement rates, and NPS (Net Promoter Score).

Through these processes, we develop products that are valuable, user-friendly, and engaging for our users.

Key Points for Selecting Products for IT Professionals

By comprehensively evaluating the following items, with a focus on elements that significantly impact product design and user experience (UX), IT product selection managers can identify IT products that are valuable and reliable for users over the long term.

Usability and Accessibility

Whether users can operate the product intuitively is extremely important. We ensure that the UI is simple and clear, and designed to allow users to accomplish their intended tasks efficiently.
Consistency in the user interface reduces the learning curve and prevents user confusion. We verify that the same operations and types of information are provided with a consistent design. Additionally, we ensure that accessibility is considered so that users from various backgrounds and experience levels can utilize the product.

Information Architecture

We verify that information is logically organized so that users can find the information they need quickly. We evaluate whether navigation menus and categorization are implemented appropriately.
Furthermore, we confirm that the search functionality provided within the product allows users to find the information they seek quickly and accurately.

Design

We verify that the experience, including interaction design and visual design, is engaging and highly satisfying when users interact with the product.
We also confirm that a mechanism is in place to collect user feedback and reflect it in improvements promptly.

Performance and Reliability

We verify that the application response time is fast, allowing users to operate without frustration. We check for any design issues that could lead to performance degradation.
Additionally, we confirm that the system maintains high stability with minimal crashes or bugs, evaluating whether consistent performance can be sustained over the long term.

Security

We confirm that user personal information and data are appropriately protected. We evaluate whether encryption and access controls are properly implemented.
Furthermore, we verify that the product complies with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, specifically checking for adherence to privacy protection regulations such as GDPR.

Scalability and Future-Proofing

We confirm that the product possesses the flexibility to accommodate future expansions and feature additions.
Specifically, we verify that the product is updated regularly with new features and security patches, and that a robust support system is in place. We also evaluate the product from the perspective of its ability to scale smoothly as your business grows.
